sylvan spell: choosing your tree familiar
As Druids, Celts, hedgewitches, and J.R. R. Tolkien knew and passed down in lore to us, trees contain powerful magic. Each tree is a being with its own distinct energy. Perhaps you have a grove in your patch when you take a walk and feel drawn to a certain area. Follow that sense and see if it takes you to a certain tree. If so, this tree has chosen you. You can also select a tree that looks special to you in some way, perhaps the trunk has an appealing pattern, or the leaves strike you as particularly fine-looking.
Befriend this tree and it can be your forest familiar. Name your tree and bind it to you with a naming ritual. Try to let the name come to you in a dream, but you can also pick the name, as I did with my first forest familiar from the family farm. I was a Tolkien-loving teen and dubbed an ancient willow Treebeard. Once you have identified your tree, take a small sheaf of paper and write down the name of your newfound familiar. Place this on your altar overnight and visit your tree at first light of dawn. Speak the following spell aloud:
In this dew of morning,
I honor my connection to you, ____________ [say the treeâs name]
In this mist of dawn,
I seal my oath to you, ____________ [say the treeâs name]
This magical bond will serve us both
For the good of all. So mote it be.
Now take the paper with the treeâs name and roll it into a scroll. Bury it under one of the treeâs shallow roots so it will stay hidden and bond with the soil.
